CFB Trenton Commander Charged With Murder

Personnel at Canadian Forces Base Trenton say they're ``shocked'' that their base commander has been charged with killing two women and assaulting two others.

Colonel Russell Williams of Tweed, Ontario, about 30 minutes north of Trenton, was arrested yesterday in Ottawa.

Lieutenant Annie Morin, a public affairs officer at C-F-B Trenton, says pretty much everyone on the base is shocked.

She says the commander was respected and very much liked.

Williams walked confidently into the provincial courthouse in Belleville, Ontario in hand and leg shackles this afternoon.

He was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 27-year-old Jessica Lloyd of Belleville and Marie Comeau, a 38-year-old corporal based at C-F-B Trenton.

Williams is also charged with forcible confinement, break and enter and sexual assault in two separate home invasions in the Tweed area in September of 2009.

He was remanded in custody and will appear by video on February 18th.

Terra Dafoe, a friend of Lloyd, says she feels police didn't do enough to warn women of a possible predator on the loose after two sex assaults in September.

She says she feels police failed women in the area by not providing the warning until after Lloyd disappeared 11 days ago.

At a news conference police said they issued an advisory last week about safety concerns for females living alone.
