Aboriginal Pride

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Last week the design that will be etched into the medals for the Vancouver Olympics was revealed.

It's a killer whale and raven motif rooted in ancient aboriginal art.

I don't know what kind of performance we're going to get for the opening or closing ceremonies but I'm going to guess it will have an aboriginal theme.

Does it bug anyone else that so often in this country the aboriginal population and the rest of us --- for lack of a better term --- are so often in conflict yet when the Olympics roll around or any other public function that magically disappears.

Either we're being disengenious about our pride in Canada's aboriginal history or we're all stubborn when the world isn't watching.

Let's use the Olympics as the starting point for some consistency. If we're going to show off our aboriginal pride when the world is watching, we should maintain it when the world isn't.

Maybe that will lead to some meaningful dialogue and an end to the games.
